Fall Caesar

Fall Caesar

A Poem by Smiley Fry

We used to be just neighbors

We saw each other

We smiled

We lowered our heads and moved on

We used to be just friends

We sat by each other

We chatted

We laughed at stupid stuff

We used to be like brothers

We were there when the other has fallen

We bickered

We pushed each other down once we were mighty

Et tu, Brute?

You dug a hole in my yard

A hole I never knew was there

You shoved me in when I was tall and mighty

The king has fallen

The dirt walls cracked

The old stone shattered

The pit only grew deeper

Ages passed

I had forgotten that the hole was there

But you threw me a giant rope ladder

And you set me free

We are brothers again

You came back the next day with your spade in hand

Ready to fill it back in

But you stood too far on the edge

You tumbled in and took the ladder with you

And I don’t know how to set you free…
