“When you die, and your life flashes before your eyes… do you think you see the good moments or do you see the bad?”
That’s Sam. His eye’s are closed as he speaks in a soft voice and he seems to be in a half asleep, half awake state, kind of like a hypnagogia. Reese throws his head back and utters a wild laugh.” That's deep”, He says. Keegan tells him to shut up or he’ll get us all caught. Keegan is his girlfriend. I turn to Sam, ready to answer his question. “It probably depends on what kind of life you have lived”, I say. “That was deeper”,  Reese comments, and resumes in his manic laughter. Keegan scowls at me, like its my fault her boyfriend is constantly high. I ignore her and lift my head to the clouds. We’re on the school roof: forbidden, but pretty accessible, even for us.The sky is open and calm. It’s a light blue color, like Sam’s eyes. The same eyes that flutter open and turn to me suddenly. “I was surprised when you agreed to come”, he starts. “I thought you were too much of a hard a*s”. I roll my eyes. Sam’s always cracking on my ability to attend classes and get higher than average grades. I think he only skips so often because he’s scared he’s not smart enough- which i think is the dumbest thing ever, because Sam’s probably smarter than us all. How he convinced me to skip today is beyond my knowledge also. Maybe i decided that if i had to sit through one more rant on how we will all be sorry once we step into the real world, i would have to shoot myself. Maybe it’s because Sam’s text : lets get out of here. was so inviting and random that i felt obliged to agree. I don’t regret coming, though. Even if i feel out of place, humoring Sam as he rambles about the wonders of life and death, avoiding Keegan's glares and listening to Reese laugh and laugh, because he hasn't got a care in the world. I know missing fourth period doesn't matter as much as it should.
Sam bumps his shoulder with mine because he doesn't like being ignored. “Where’d you go?” he asks, like whenever i drift off. I don’t answer that question. “When you die”, I ask instead, “Do you think you’re going to see the good moments of your life, or the bad?” Ha. I've hit him with his own question. Reese makes a “Ooohhh” sound and all of us, even Keegan, turn to hear Sam’s answer. After an annoying dramatic pause, the corners of his mouth twist into a smirk and he says “Neither. When i die, i think my life will flash before me in a jumble too fast that by the time i’ll be able to comprehend it all- i’ll be dead”. We are all quiet for a moment to think about that. Then Reese mutters something like “whoa” and the moment is broken. Accepting this as a triumph, Sam leans back against me and closes his eyes again. If i really cared about winning this invisible argument, i would point out how contradicting his statement is. But i don’t, and it’s almost time for fifth period anyway, so i let Sam win this one and settle back against him as i finally close my eyes.
