This blog contains information about corporate identification numbers (CINs), including what they are, how to check them, and other relevant topics. Every company registered in India is given a unique identification number called a Corporate Identification Number (CIN) by the Registrar of Companies (ROC). Companies get their CIN from the ROC after obtaining their Registration Certificate. The CIN is important because all business documents that are submitted to the MCA, including audits and other reports, must have this unique number.

What is CIN Number?

Businesses that are founded in India are given the 21-digit Corporate Identification Number (CIN), which is an alpha-numeric identifier, by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs after they have registered with the ROC in each of the state-wide ROCs.

A CIN is given to all firms that register in India; some instances are shown below:

One Person Company (OPC)

  • Nidhi Company
  • Limited Liability Company
  • State-owned enterprises
  • The company from Section 8 and others

A CIN is not obtained, however, by Limited Liability Partnerships (LLP) that are registered in India. The Limited Liability Partnership Identifying Number, or LLPIN for short, is a unique seven-digit number that the ROC assigns to LLPs.

Description of the 21-digit of CIN

Section 1

Whether a firm is "Listed" or "Unlisted" on the Indian stock exchange is indicated by the first character of its CIN. Therefore, the first character shows whether or not the company is listed on a stock market. If a corporation is mentioned, its CIN will begin with the letter "L," and if not, it will begin with the letter "U."

Section 2

The economic activity of a corporation or the industry to which it belongs is classified by the next five digits. This classification is predicated on the type of economic activity that such a facility would engage in. Every industry and category has a number assigned by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA).

Section 3

The Indian state where the corporation is registered is represented by the next two letters. For example, GJ stands for Gujarat, MH for Maharashtra, KA for Karnataka, and so on. It functions similarly to that of a car registration number.

Section 4

A CIN number's last four digits indicate the year the business was founded.

Section 5

The company class is represented by the next three letters. Whether a corporation is a public limited company or a private limited company is indicated by these three letters. If the company's CIN is Government of India, it indicates that the Indian government owns the business; if it is FTC, it indicates that the company is a subsidiary of a foreign corporation.

Section 6

The last six numbers are the registration number that the relevant ROC (Registrar of Companies) has issued.

The significance of a CIN for a business

The 21-digit CIN has a special significance that makes it simple to comprehend and identify crucial organizational data.

  • It is intended to gather basic information about companies that are officially registered with the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) of the country.
  • A firm's CIN (Corporate Identification Number), which is used to trace all of its activities starting with the moment the ROC first registered the company, must be provided on all transactions with the relevant ROC (Registrar of Companies).
  • Organizations can be identified or followed using CIN numbers for several levels of data that are kept up to date by MCA/ROC. The CIN gives information on the company's identification and the Registrar of Companies (ROC).

How can your business get a CIN number?

Following your decision about the kind of business to launch, you need to take the following actions to get a CIN.

  • Get a DSC (Digital Signature Certificate).
  • Obtain a DIN (Director Identification Number).
  • The new user registration process must be finished.
  • After completing this, complete the company incorporation process.
  • Incorporate the Company

The application will be reviewed and approved by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) upon receipt of the company's incorporation documents. The CIN is assigned once all of the application's data has been confirmed.
