Chapter 1

Unbelievable, I usually have extremely bad luck, but this is just over the top, what the hell was that thing that appeared to be chasing me last night. Maybe I should tell somebody, yeah like anyone would believe me; I’d probably end up in a mental asylum. Or maybe it was just me; I was so tired last night that I could most likely have been hallucinating; I can’t say that I have slept well these past few weeks. I can hardly sleep at night with those horrifying dreams that I’ve been having. The only problem is that when I wake up I just can’t seem to remember anything of what happens in the dream; I just wake up all covered with sweat and gasping really hard. Because of the dreams I prefer to work instead of sleeping. Anyway I should get to work, before my boss Randy Spark starts to call. Apart from all the things that have been happening I’ll just put them aside for now. It is not like I can solve them now, I can’t even explain them.

So she got up from bed, walked to the window to see what was outside and saw nothing and no one. Afterwards, she took a shower, got dressed, took a bite out of a piece of toast, got the keys to her car. After what had happened last night there was no way she was going to walk to work ever again, and drove her car.

As she walked through the door of her office, Alice jumped right in front of her.

“I wish you’d stop doing that” she sighed with relief that she didn’t bump into her.

“Do what?” Alice asked.

“Appear from thin air, it scares the hell out of me every time you do it” Rose complained as she tried to go around Alice to her office.

“Ok, ok don’t get your panties in a twist Rose, I just came to tell you that someone call several times, and every time he calls I keep telling him that you’re not in yet, but he insists on talking only with you, but the odd thing is that he won’t leave a massage nor tell me his name.” Alice was said that while going to the coffee machine, making some coffee and giving me a cup too.

“Maybe it was something important so that is why he didn’t leave a massage, as for the name part that is weird. Anyway, next time he calls just connect him to me directly.” Rose told Alice, while trying to look through all the files on her desk.

“Seriously, from yesterday to today five people have gone missing? What the hell is going on? Is there some kind of a serial killer on the loose?” Rose inquired, as she looked at the pictures of the missing persons.

“Maybe, maybe not, the thing is that the police don’t find any bodies or evidence to say that there was some kind of kidnapping or killing, so they assume that the missing people just run away from home. That is way the sent the file to us.” Alice spoke from her desk outside my office.

“Yeah right, there has been about twenty people gone missing this month and the police still think that they just ran away.” Rose griped back at her. Now she was getting pissed off. How can the police just sit on their asses and do nothing. And what the hell can she do as a private investigator for so many people. There are so many gone missing that even she doesn’t know where to start, plus there wasn’t even any evidence to start from. Without evidence she can’t even determine if they are missing or running away from something.

“That guy is on line one” Alice yelled from the other room. Rose thanked Alice and answered the phone.

“Hello this is Rose Hunter!” Rose said to the other man on the other side of the phone line.

“Good you’re there, now you’ll die!?” the man whispered. Rose was so shocked that her mind went blank.

“Is this some kind of stupid joke?” Rose asked incredulous, while staring at nothing in particular.

“No, Miss Rose Hunter you are about to die, shot through the head by a sniper.” He informed her, without any pinch of irony. At that exact second her pen fell to the floor, and she bent to pick it up, which was when she heard an ear piercing sound, that rattled her so much that she found herself on her hands and knees. The first thing that she did was get under the desk, while scramming for Alice to call 911. But to her amazement Alice wasn’t answering. That was when she decided to calm herself and listen to what was going on around her, ok so there was no more shooting, she looked up and saw no one on the roof of the other building; but just for safety she crawled on all four to get outside her office. Now, “what should she do?” But when she looked around Alice was nowhere to be seen. Ok so the girl was clever and ran, at least Rose hope that Alice called the cops. She should get out of here in case the shooter decided to came and finish her up, face to face, or more likely her face to his gun.

In the next hour Rose went to the police station, came back with them, now they were looking around and they found nothing.

“Miss Hunter are you sure that someone tried to kill you?” the detective asked with a lot of skepticism in his voice.

“Detective you’re not implying that I made all this up? I’m telling you that there was a man on the phone, he said that I was to die by a gunshot to the head, which is when heard the shot. You can even ask Alice, she’s the one that put him on the phone with me” Rose kept explaining to the detective, but he was looking at her like she was crazy.

“Rose! After I put you on the phone with that guy I went to the bathroom and when I came back everything was in order accept you weren’t here” Alice was saying with a wiry look in her eyes. Now Rose was starting to doubt herself. If she looked around more closely, she could see that even the bullet hole which was supposed to be through the window wasn’t there, the window wasn’t even broken actually everything seemed the same. Rose kept thinking maybe she was losing her mind or maybe it was playing tricks on her.

“Rose! Go home and sleep I’ll talk to Randy and tell him that you need a few days off” Alice assured her.

“Yeah, you’re right maybe all I need to do is sleep” Rose said, while getting her bag and keys and got out of the office as fast as she could.
