Loveless Regret

Loveless Regret

A Poem by Connor Veenstra

I swore I'd learned the hard way with the girls I left behind,
As I turned my back to leave them they all broke down and cried,
I swore "Never again" as my black heart broke inside,
But when I saw you there I knew, I knew you must be mine.

The moment that I reached for you and you took up my hand,
The shame welled up inside my heart, I was a foolish man,
You smiled and gave yourself to me, it all went to my plan,
I kissed you and I played along, began my cursed sham.

The passion is a stage act, my kisses only void,
Any romance that you seek from me I choose to avoid,
Though there will be moments that both of us enjoy,
My loneliness, my foolishness, will both our lives destroy

If I could travel back in time, go back to the start,
I'd stop the road that ends with me breaking you apart,
But the pain of my former love never will depart,
Evermore a piece of you will stick inside my heart.

Changing ourselves is the hard part, destined to repeat the same history over and over regardless of how much we love. This had a strong theme and well expressed emotion. Great writing.
