You want me to write
(and you’re the only one that nags me to do so)
So I’ll share
the first conversation
I recall having with
Tony’s wife
It was Thanksgiving,
and of course it was cold
Gary and Susan don’t allow smoking in the
house,
so I went outside
to join the others
Suzanne was out there,
looking fierce
and elegant
with her cigarette
and i just remember
how her voice startled me
because i didn’t think
such a petite lady
could have such a husky
drawl
"God, I hate when people put up Christmas decorations so early!"
I agreed with her.
Later that Christmas,
she gave me
a matching ivory scarf and beret.
I don’t have either pieces anymore,
unfortunately.
You don’t want to really talk to anyone
(and I know how you feel)
So I’ll reminisce about
Suzanne’s house
instead
A tree
in every room at Christmas
Her sketchbook
The looks
she used to give someone
when she thought someone was
talking nonsense
After selling my house,
I moved in to my mother’s house.
Thinking of Suzanne,
I put up two Christmas trees,
one in the living room,
one in the dining room.
I never told you about this.
I never got a chance to tell her
How much I wish she was my grandmother
So I’ll just tell
you
Instead
