This Paved Road we walk today,
Wasn't always the chosen way.
Our ancestors walked until their feet and minds were worn.
Their mode of movement driven although tired, bitter and scorned.
The ridicule and humiliation accepted,
The rejection and segregation expected
But forward they kept on...
This Paved Road we walk today,
Wasn't always the chosen way.
Our forefathers fought battles to be someone
Similar to you and me.
They had obstacles to stop their stride, many died holding on to their pride,
Thank God for their determination, that kept hope alive.
This Paved Road we walk today,
Was once made of dirt, stone and clay.
Our ancestors wore shackles and chains around their ankles and hands
They looked searched for our place in another man's land
They pushed on traveling this road with no shoes on their feet.
They survived on crumbs for leftovers and remains only to eat.
We must not stop in our travels on this Paved Road
We must continue because Our continued progress is what is owed.
This must be our commitment to our ancestors, mentors and leaders
Those who fought, couldn't die, wouldn't die carried our load
Our progress is expected from all people who Paved Today's Road.
