Moonlit OblivionA Story by panopticonThe girl stood in the dark hallway, the abandoned school corridor pitch black save for the silver moonlight that shone through the cracked windows. Gleaming glass fragments littered the rough floor, the crystal-like substance so clear yet so threatening. The unwelcoming atmosphere had been alleviated by only a lavished melody; so full of life, so out of place... Her long, silky hair tumbled down her small shoulders in dark cascades, her face lit a ghostly shade of white as she flickered her sightless blue eyes across the dusty walls of aged stone. Quietly; shielding herself from the cold, the young girl placed a foot forwards, unsettling specs of dust and clouds of powdery glass. The soft thump had been carried away by the harsh howling of the wind, whisked away into the violent rustle of leaves beyond the school premises. Running her delicate hands across the chilly surface of walls weathered away by the flow of time, the girl continued down the abandoned hallway, hooking her slender fingers tufts of unseen cobwebs along the way. She seemed to float fearlessly, shamelessly, in her fluorescent white gown, drawn towards the melody so sweet yet so faint... Caught in a trance she was; oblivious to the haunted" ghastly, shadows that lurked behind her, looming over the young child which would make a fine meal. The broken chords of the piano shifted, lurching up a semitone as she took another step towards the musky room. Extending her outer hand" her left hand" away from the wall, the girl reached towards the pale moon, her fingers twitching elegantly to the melody as if they were tingling along the ebony keys of the instrument. The shadows approached yet another pace, lusting for one last taste of the girl's youthful essence as her gown danced gently to the wind. She paused only for a moment, though, walking forward once again as the melody grew stronger and stronger still; growing closer and closer yet remaining so far away. Feeling her way around the corner, the sightless girl turned on her heel, cautiously placing a foot in before the other as she finally found the source of of the music. She laid her palms on the door with naive fervor, pressing her ear against the wooden opening as she closed her eyes. It was too soon that the harmony of the piano then softened, fading away completely and leaving the girl in the sullen darkness. It was too soon that she was left to be cornered by deceitful shadows that wrapped it's presence around the child, hypnotized by the shard of delusional hope. Too soon that that flicker of hope and light had disappeared along with the angelic instrument she had for so long wished to reach... Engulfed by unsaid darkness for all eternity, it was already too late when the girl had woken from her moonlit fantasy. © 2013 panopticon |
