Chapter Two: Ivy

Chapter Two: Ivy

A Chapter by Jessica L. W.

I was packing my stuff for school, social studies book, pencil, notebook, wait, where’s my agenda?

I got off my bed and walked to my desk. Not here. I hear something fall. I turn around; my agenda is on the floor by my bed. How did it get there? I walk up to it, and crouched down, it’s open to yesterday’s page, “I <3 you? Who’s M. J. W.?”

There is a whisper, “Love you.” It’s male.

I grab my agenda, put it in my backpack, and slung my backpack over my shoulder. Whoever you are, I don’t care. I have been able to hear and see ghosts since I was six, my parents always thought I had issues. I leave my room, I see a shadow at the bottom of the stairs, as usual, and I walk down the stairs and out the front door.

I start walking towards school. I’m being followed; I look over my shoulder, there’s that shadow again. I sighed, stop following me, please.

Another whisper, “Ivy,” Same male voice.

I look up at the clouds, looks like rain. I should have brought an umbrella.

The shadow comes closer, it’s male, he has curly dark brown hair, down to the base of his neck, tall, muscular, gray eyes, around twenty, looks like he’s from the seventies. He pushes the hair out of my face.

I keep walking, and made it to school with ten minutes to spare.

Kevin is sitting on a bench, reading a book, I walk up to him, he looks up at me and smiles, I smile back.

          “Hi.” Kevin says.

          “Hello.” I reply.

Kevin has dark brown hair, long, down to his shoulders, he plans on dyeing it black, gray eyes, he is tall and muscular.

“We need to finish that project; can you come to my house?” Kevin asks.

“Sure, I’ll have to text my parents first.” I say as I take out my phone.

Hey mom Im going to kevins after school wont be home till later, I texted.

I look up to find Kevin’s gray eyes staring at me, “Yes?” I ask.

“No-nothing,” He stammers, looking away, “Maxine’s here.”

Maxine was riding a motorcycle, she took off her helmet, her hair was dark purple. As usual, her clothes were tight and revealing. Maxine wore color contacts, bright red. She walked up to us and smiled, “What’s up guys?”

Kevin replies, “I tried to contact my dead uncle again, nothing.”

Maxine says, “You’ll get him, don’t worry.” She runs her hands through her hair, and plays with her tongue ring.
I look at Maxine and Kevin, and then hear… ”Ivy” I turn to see who it is and there is that ghost again. He is standing next to Kevin and just staring at me, so I stared back. He looked like he was smiling.

“Maxi before we go to class will you read me?” I asked because I need to know what’s going on with this ghost.
“Sure, here let me find my tarot cards.” She swings her bag over her shoulder and heaves it on to the bench. “Here we go. Divide the cards into three stacks as you think of your question.”
Kevin moves closer to look at the cards as Maxine flips one over. The lovers.

“You will soon find your true love in unexpected places.” Maxi closes her eyes. You see Maxi has powers like me but, she can see the past, present, and future. “I see you standing in the circle,” The place where her, Kevin and I practice witch craft, “Talking to a man, and wow he is hot. Anyways he is trying to tell you something but I can’t hear. Wait he said I love you.” She opens her eyes. They are bloodshot.

“Wow, Ivy has a secret admirer.” Kevin says from the bench, he looks almost mad.

“So should we go for round two?” Maxine asks. I was too shocked to say anything so far.

“Sure.” I managed to get that out. What if that man was the ghost that’s been haunting me? Is he in love with me?

“Alright here we go.” She flips the next card. I gasp. The Death card. “Oh god.” Maxine had closed her eyes.

“What do you see?” Kevin and I ask at the same time. He gave me a half smile then turned to Maxine, who had sunk on to the bench.

“Kevin is laying on the ground, and you are sitting next to him. He isn’t moving but you just keep staring off into the distance and twitching. Some kind of shadow moves closer and you stand and raise your hands in front of you. Something tackles you and hovers over Kevin.” She stops and open her eyes. Her contacts look the same color of the rest of her eyes. “God that was horrible.” She says as she rubs her eyes.

“Did I, like die or something?” Kevin asks in a low voice. I sit next to him and he puts his arm over my shoulders. I have always known Kevin liked me but lately he has been more open about it. I think he is going to ask me out soon.
“I don’t know it all went blank.” Maxine squirms impatiently in her seat.

“Well, let see the last one.” I say through the silence. Maxi flips the next one without talking. The Hanged Man card. I don’t know that one.

“The Hanged Man card can represent anything from boredom to rebirth.” She places her hand on the card and closes her eyes one last time. “You are back in the circle. Kevin is still on the ground so I guess it’s the same night. You are like lying on Kevin crying. You turn and a white shadow moves from the trees. You stop crying and run toward the light. It moves passed you and hovers over Kevin.” She stops and opens her eyes “Black again.” Maxi looks at me and then to Kevin. Her predictions were never wrong, but they were never this strong either.

“So what are we going to do?” I ask staring at Maxi and Kevin.

“Well I don’t know about you two but I have to go find something to do about my eyes. I will swing by Kevin’s house after school, love ya’ll” Maxi picks up her tarot cards and swings her biker bag over her shoulder, retreating across the campus.
“Well I have a strange feeling I’m going to die.” Kevin says in a humorous tone. I turn and eye him. He still has his arm over me so it wasn’t easy.

“Don’t say stuff like that, you’ll just jinks us.” I look him in the gray eyes. A girl could fall I love with a boy like him. His gray eyes stare deep into mine.

“Okay, so do you like Aaron?” His expression changes demand.

“The star football player? Have you gone completely insane?” I say while laughing. He cracks a smile.

“Ha I must have or I wouldn’t think that.” He stands just as soon as the final bell rings. “Do you uh want me to walk you to class?” he pulls his hands through his brown hair.

“Sure but you have to carry my purse.” I say. We both laugh as we walk toward the art wing.

I FINALLY got to work on it, and not even the whole thing, just half of it though. J. Maredith stole it, and demanded me to give her ideas, which I did, then she spent 20 minutes researching, it took me 5 tries to spell researching, make that 6
