Shock and Awe

Shock and Awe

A Poem by insanity
"

Never take your freedom for granted, freedom is never free.

"

In the sands of the east

Uncle Sam slayed the beast

Where no flowers grow

He put on a show

Shock and awe

Is what Baghdad saw

Young people from all around
Set foot on the barren ground

Guns in hand

Boots filled with sand

Heavy equipment on their back

Marching into Iraq

Hello 'Vietnam'
Goodbye Saddam

Your nation will soon fall

Is what it said on the wall

Written in invisible ink

Once more we stand on the brink

The battle raged
War was waged

As the tide turned

Mettle was earned

The soldiers enraptured

As Baghdad was captured

So it came to be

Out at sea

Commander in chief

Gave the troops relief

Major combat operations are done

The war had been won

Six months after

There was no celebration, nor laughter
A young man carrying a picture of his wife

Lay bleeding, fighting for his life

Screaming in pain with his final breath
He closed his eyes, welcoming death

A knock at the door
Made her heart fall to the floor

Two men, one with a badge of red

Came to tell her he was dead

She cried out in pain
As the skies filled with rain

A week passes

Behind black sunglasses

His family weeps

For their son forever sleeps

Hidden from the passing sun

At the Hotel Arlington

The days pass, nothing feels the same

Uncle Sam is the one to blame
The woman screams out once more

As her body crumples to the floor

Blood spatters on the vanity

As she ends the insanity

As more lives are lost

We are reminded of freedom's cost

On foreign shores

Young people die in wars

We've seen this scene before

What ARE we fighting for?
