White Horse III: Wilting Away

White Horse III: Wilting Away

A Poem by insanity
"

Yes, I'm well aware this is similar to the ending in the Notebook, it's been pointed out elsewhere so please don't beat a dead horse.

"

Many years have passed

The children are grown at last

Through the years

Despite all the tears

Their love has remained strong

The man’s heart still sings the song

Its tune may have changed

And the notes rearranged

But it is all the same

For within him lies a burning flame

From the nadir of his soul

His beloved is what makes him whole

Much has changed in the days now done

But her beauty still shines like the sun

Throughout the storms and rains

She never lets life’s pains
Rest heavy on her soul

Her heart is not broken, it remains whole

For every break and every bend

The boy did mend

For as he grew into man

He stuck closely to the plan

He held her close every day

To the heavens he did pray

That he could stay true to his promise

For after their first kiss

He could have no other girl

For in that field they did twirl

And got lost for hours

Dancing among the flowers

All those years ago

As they sat here reminiscing in the snow

A revelation came to pass

About his lovely lass

For the all the love he had inside

In her he must confide

That a great pain draws near

His entire being gripped with fear

For he must give her the news

That’s been giving him the blues

For once can always sense

When the reaper hangs with suspense

Watching over every day

As the light of life fades away

His lungs seize with pain

As he begins to wheeze again

He draws her in closely

And whispers so softly

I have something to say

My love, to you I pray

That you’ll be strong

My heart has sung its last song

For it has always sung for you

My love has always been true

But now I am encumbered by pain

My heart races like a speeding train

For I don’t have much time left

Soon my dear you shall be bereft

And I fear I cannot handle the ache

To know that your heart will soon break

All that I ask of you now

Is that you can remember how

We danced that night before we grew old

The very night I finally grew bold

For I longed to be in your life
In my dreams, you were my wife

The day we danced in that field

And my love for you was revealed

That dream became a reality

For I love your being in totality

But these are the last words I speak

I can feel myself growing weak

Some day you will join me above

Do not fret, it is you I will forever love

Sobbing, she smiled at the man

Honey, you’ve done the best you can

I am an old woman, past her peak

For I too have begun to grow weak

I can feel the life being sapped from my veins

Only a little strength remains

But I must say something to you too

For you have always been true

To that which you promised me

To my heart, you will always hold the key

With what’s left of my voice

I know that I made the right choice

For you have been the light of my life

I am proud to be your wife

You have brought me such joy

From such a simple boy

Has grown a beautiful man

We all followed your master plan

Our children our raised

Thanks to those words you phrased

Such guidance you gave

You taught us all to be brave

And to live without fear

You made the path clear

And as we lay here

I dare not shed a tear

For I have nothing to regret

My love, you have not failed me yet

I fear our time is coming to and end

You are my lover, my best friend

So before my breath leaves me

I must make this plea

That when the gloom descends

And life ends

That before you walk into the light

Please turn to your right

And take my hand in your own

For this I have always known

Eternity is ours to spend

Our life, our love, will never end

Now you may ask what happened to these two

Sit down and listen, I have an amazing story for you

I left you wondering with love’s first kiss

Could you believe these two will soon share wedded bliss?

Some might say, problems on the horizon, may loom

In fact their love is only beginning to bloom

As flowers sprout from the soil
Again the boy’s blood begins to boil

His betrothed has news of grandeur

Of the life growing in side her

I can’t believe it, shouted the boy

My heart is filled with joy

He exclaimed, as the two embraced

Again the boy’s heart raced

As his beloved shared more news

That in this case, good things come in twos

He wondered how she knew

As her abdomen grew

That inside her there were two

She swore it was all true

He trusted her with all his heart

Just as she had at the very start

With every breath he loved her more

Despite those pesky late night visits to the store

Still he questioned with fervent superstition

She said, silly fool, it’s a woman’s intuition

Well my dear, he said, I have no fear

Once you give birth all shall be clear

My love for you is boundless

I’ve felt it ever since that first kiss

Soon we shall be married, I cannot wait

My heart beats solely for that date

For on that day, our souls will unite

Together, through this world we shall fight

Intertwined as when we first danced

For this moment will leave us eternally enhanced

Our time in this world is short my dear

But I have no fear

For there is always time in our afterlife

Free of pain, devoid of strife

We can spend eternity together in paradise

I hope that shall suffice

Why yes, she whispered, it shall indeed, my love

I cannot wait for our time up above

But we must focus on what’s down here

For in a few months, the babies shall appear

You are to be both a father and husband

Though, she giggled, that’s obvious as I still expand

All that I ask, is that you remain true

To those words I had once said to you

He smiled, why of course, my sweet darling

You make my heart sing

Every morning, like the birds

Frankly, it’s difficult to put this in words

My dear, all I ever wanted to do

Was be in love with you

But how does one describe something so deep

Like how beautiful you are when you sleep

Or how your hair blows softly in the breeze

When we used to walk beneath the trees

I can’t help but take in your beauty

So radiant, so pure, it consumes me

It’s far deeper than just the skin

For yours is a beauty that comes from within

I am forever yours, this I hope you remember

When, in our love, we fall into the depths of December

And icicles form on our roof

I can only hope we do not end up aloof

But as I’ve said many times before

Our love is so much more

Than the ordinary romance
For on me you took an extraordinary chance

Though we may grow grey old

Our hearts hold something worth far more than gold

It’s a treasure I’ve always held dear

Since we discovered it here

Buried beneath the ground

Just yearning to be found

For I have a beautiful song within my heart

For in love, my sweet, we have perfected the art
