Aftermath

Aftermath

A Poem by MCS

Stained glass
illustrates the sacredness
of this place

A stainless steel blade
a quick flash
it’s done

The slashes of red
an obscene canvas
of pain and madness

The soft light
gives this space
its cathedral-like feel

Pale white skin
marred by your hand
mutilated and raw

In contrast your face
translucent and white
looks at peace in this mess

Trembling hands press 911
a toneless voice
requests assistance

Standing stock still
waiting for responders
a voice speaks incoherent words

Strangers handle your limp body
wishing it could be me
but I’m rooted to the spot

Your sanctuary
now crawling with strangers
my throat is black with sorrow

Madness races through my mind
how can this place be restored
what will become of your lifeblood

As you’re tended to
my hand is bandaged
your key has bitten into my flesh

My blood has left its mark here
small droplets punctuate my last stand
white and red overwhelms

A statement is required
my lips cannot move
as these strangers hover

My eyes follow
as you’re moved
and the door closes

I love the picture first of all, did you draw/paint it? It is beautiful and I love how it can mean something to everyone. Your poem captures my attention, creates fear, sends chills up the spine. I actually just wrote a gruesome poem kind of like this. I enjoyed reading it and I want to read more. Great job.
