Seven Winter Snapshots

Seven Winter Snapshots

A Poem by MCS

1.
On this open road
one drives on
always on the outskirts
of life
today it’s not winter or spring
yet the wheels turn
and fuel burned

2.
On this particular
stretch of road
bordered by cedars
on one side
an old church and its grave yard
where the dismayed dead recline
are they here or moved on to there

3.
On this day of neither winter nor spring
driving past these snapshot of life
yet not apart of the scenery
and immense feeling of sadness descends
like an icicle growing in length
consumes the driver
the one not apart of the landscape

4.
Cold drapes over the scene
wrapping its self tight
touching man and beast
all by now tired of winter
daring to dream of warmth
and light
this will bring tender new growth

5.
Off the side of the road
old abandoned rail tracks
a decaying railway wagon
its colours fading
with darkened windows
sits lost
its history forgotten

6.
Bleak light promising
a snow fall
perhaps not the last
of the season
as old snow dots the landscape
like hardened puddles of candle wax
growing dim with roadside dirt

7.
Afternoon snow-haze
will spill into a moonless night
promising a bit more winter
yet it can’t last much longer
smiles are stronger as is the sun’s warmth
the volume has been turned up
on the birdsong
