Dichotomy

Dichotomy

A Poem by MCS

When I close my eyes, I see

how things were

and what could have been

so many images and sounds

run through my mind

Angry words followed by cries

slamming of doors

rattling of doorknobs

banging demanding entry

threats uttered

Thumping fist disturbing crockery

chairs scrapping hardwood floors

meals left untouched

bewildered children

filled with fear

That’s how it was

How it could have been

Two healthy, happy parents

three well adjusted children

laughter abound

sunny, happy home

no room for fear

Meals enjoyed

day’s events shared

carefree conversations

smiles and encouraging words

strengthening a family unit

Taking a loving interest

in the well being of little ones

using hands to show love

speaking words to ensure trust

hugging to seal the family circle
