The way of addiction

The way of addiction

A Poem by MCS

I lit cigarette the dark sky having abandoned me

an inhale to calm the nerves

befriending a stranger with a strike of a match

an inhale to calm the nerves

words exchange between strangers

We fed the moment, what the day had fed us

an inhale to calm the nerves

huddling in a door way

an inhale to calm the nerves

rain driving down, wet pavement glistening

I exist with the solitary sound of a striking match

an inhale to calm the nerves

surrounded with the scent of phosphorous

an inhale to calm the nerves

the sky as gray as the ash flicked

Final inhale sets the stage for departure

snubbing out tobacco ends the moment

silently strangers part ways

until the next strike and inhale

the way of addiction
