The Tale of Two Lovers

The Tale of Two Lovers

A Poem by J. R. Graham
"

A narrative poem I wrote in my sophomore year of high school about a couple who were separated by the Second World War.

"

The tale of two lovers,
Half a world apart
The country consumed by war and a vicious dictator
A man and a woman, who promised one another’s heart
The man leaving to eliminate a foreign traitor
Half a world apart,
Letter keep their faith
Nightmares come to her of her love in the form of a wraith

Looming sadness travels across the world
Both in the cold as the harsh winds whirled
Alone, the woman will pray,
While the man stalks his prey
Murder in the first degree,
He hopes for a new decree

Years apart,
They remain in another’s hearts
This vicious dictator,
Lain to rest,
By the sought of his own hand
The lovers feel blessed
Yet the miracle soon diminished
This war remain unfinished

Silently, the woman weeps
On the other side; the corpses heap
The letter grow longer,
The years drag stronger
The man promises his return
Yet, the woman will yearn

The year has reached 1945
The month of April, the war seems to die
While families cry
Although the war remains
Hope lives in peoples’ veins
The woman, bound by chains
Forever to love her man so far
To them both, this love seems a scar

A new day comes,
The month of May,
This war at cease
The strong hands of the government,
As they hold their valiant soldiers
Their grips release
Home, the soldiers go

Weeks without her letters,
A sleek black car arrives
Love entangles their lives
From the car, the woman sees a man
Changed by war,
The world seemed to span

Now the lovers reunited
The tales of two lovers, no longer apart
Bound by love,
The soldier brought home
Together, they fought a war
With their fingers intertwined
The lovers stay together
Until the end of days
In each other’s heart.

A write of two halves yet parallel in emotion - the horrors of duty - with the passion of dedication to each other! Interesting read and formidable write! Good work … :-)
