On The Inside Looking Out
I ran into myself today
And it was to my surprise
To see a man coming my way,
A man with my own eyes.
I did not speak, I could not speak,
To myself what words could I say?
My mind was numb, my jaw was weak,
The likeness had taken my will away.
He smiled as he looked at me
Then slowly raised his hand,
Fear welled inside, I wanted to flee
From what this creature planned.
His hand was now up high in the air
I imagined it falling upon me to maim
But he merely used it to slick his hair
And I felt compelled to do the same.
From his shoulder he flicked some dirt
Then licked his teeth, straightened his tie
And tucked in the tail of his shirt
As I mimicked him not knowing why.
He finished his chore then turned to leave
And from my mind there left all doubt,
Though this truth I wanted not to believe,
But I was on the inside looking out.
