What Smells Have to Say

What Smells Have to Say

A Poem by stephen dillon
"

Composition grapes smashed together into a wine drank from a chalice of texture, and smell, while the swiller of satire has the future seen through a keyhole in a drunkenly distorted haze made abstract by thoughts from "other mind”, the one that stumbles forward onto cobblestone kneecaps. Down River, down Broughton learning from my city what smells have to say and what jazz corner hustler is selling his fix for, maybe nothing but a wolfish grin with teeth dripping in American dollars, have no fear you learned bravery with your craft, garbage disposal logic got you on bus, train, plane where you appear in a poof of light on stage in reading houses, cafe’s, and auditoriums. When particals of your rock n roll language caught on you've made it big, proud?happy? Not quite until you have toppled idols and muted genius. Just remember one thing dig until you have got pay dirt and even then wash away all of livings veil and refuge to publish gold from the mud in which you are made and from which you are named

Uniquely different read here. So many places to go with this one...wine in the making, sweet & divine, where it takes us, the travels of a lifetime.

'Not quite until you have toppled idols and muted genius.'

Speaks to me of the poetry of one's life also...nice read.

Oh the smell and the history of wine, the splendor of the grape, grown to alcohol, and what it can do with a daily spirit.

Flows at a good pace, each image flashes and then disperses to be replaced by the next thought. I particularly like "garbage disposal logic", "coblestone kneecaps" and "swiller of satire" - the latter made me think of how cynically bemused we can get when having a drink.

Two grammatical suggestions:
"cafe's" (cafes)
"When particals" (particles)

I like this...it's not poetry..flash fictions..or a prose...just random thoughts. Smells invoke powerful thoughts, some that are good...some bad. My only suggestion on a free-form write...is to offer more pauses. Otherwise, it can read like a "run-on" sentence. I felt like you made this particular smell "metaphor" of course...come to life....it had a voice of it's own. Sarcastic in nature. Nice work.
