Dreams

Dreams

A Poem by Jane Woolf

Deafening bombs dropped endlessly,
Cries of pain and anguish filled the air
Death was everywhere
Left, right, center,
This fighting would never stop.

My companions fell,
One by one beside me
Not a single one could see
Anything but smoke
Rising into the sky.

Brave men fighting until the end,
Poor souls who would never see
A blossoming willow tree
Or swallows diving
Out of the great blue sky.

They will never see
A bug dordling along
Under the heat of the strong
Powerful sun,
Beating down on a summers day.

But they will never see,
Never know,
What it's like to feel free,
And dream.
