The Ex Factor (part I)

The Ex Factor (part I)

A Poem by Roxanne Aponte

Saw you for the first time today
since February

Or maybe it was March,
that was the last time
you broke my heart

You were cool as always
Eyes turned down
Voice churned deep
With that swagger
I had to learn to
slow my pace to

You walked me to Irving Place,
kissed me on the cheek
And I noticed
that your scent still held
onto the tiny black hairs
of your face

I knew it was the closest
I'd let myself get to you
Ever again

And I knew you were going to send me
That message after:

"It was good to see you"

And the one that followed:

"What are you up to?"

I'm stronger.
You knew it

And yet you still try to get under
the skin that's healed,

each &
every
time

But it's good to know
that I can still care about you

That...
I can still care for you

'Cause love doesn't ask to be
compensated

And so it is no longer worth
The price of me

I've been writing since I was a child: stories, poetry, much of it personal as I've been an avid journal writer for many years. I write mainly for the cathartic release. My love of words is a passion .. more..
