The Comforter

The Comforter

A Poem by My Name is Brenda and I'm a Writer

The Comforter

(I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you. John 14:18)

I pause in the midst of my busywork and look up.
Outside, in the window above the woodstove I see a nesting bird.
So still.
So calm.
So perfect.
Alive or dead?
The pose so flawless as if sculpted by the hand of a great artist.
Alive or dead?
So still.
Had the nest been there yesterday? The day before?
Had it been there for many days?
Has it been so long since I paused and looked up?
Should I draw the bird or photograph her?
I look forward to John's call so I can tell him about the nesting bird.
So still.
So calm.
So perfect.
But is she alive or dead?
I turn away and continue my busywork, but I hold the nesting bird in my thoughts.
Later, when I look up again, she is gone.
Alive!
My nesting bird is alive and I know she will come again.

I often say to my friends, that when in doubt look up. For so many people spend so much time with their eyes to the ground so that thye don't trip, they never gaze up. Yet when they do, they are often amazed at the miracles they observe. This was a wonderful writing of just that. It was well writen all the way through. Then end of it clearly tells people that by looking up, one finds a new life and a new joy to have faith in. Great job here!

I just read another beautiful poem about a dove. Thanks for writing this. I really loved it. I am going to add it to my favorites and send it to my friend.
