Never Count Sheep

Never Count Sheep

A Poem by Christine
"

insomnia is fun

"

They say counting sheep helps you fall asleep

But I find sleep difficult with hoof prints on my pillow.

The place where I rest my head has stopped being restful.

It’s hard to get support from a pillow that is walked all over

Especially when my mind molds a perfect feeding trough

Where sheep like to stop and make themselves at home.

If the sandman were a shepherd,

He could herd them away to green pastures

Where they couldn’t kick dust in my eyes.

Since they always come back the next night,

Why should the same sheep be counted more than once?

I stopped counting my sheep

After I stripped them of their wool

And spun it into a thread of my own devices

But wool is itchy

And I have a wardrobe full of it.
