Going the Distance

Going the Distance

A Poem by Christine

What can it mean

When the space spanning from hand to mouth

Suddenly extends for miles?

I used to run marathons in minutes

Fooling my muscles into believing it would be over soon

But when your speed catches up to you

You realize the distance is more than you can handle.

I cheated the distance between hand and mouth

Shrinking it down to actual size

Bypassing the beating orb in my chest cavity I ignored for so long,

Waiting to pump hurt through tiny vessels covering the entirety of my body.

The kind of hurt that has the potential of invading the crevices of the mind.

But when your blood is running rampant with endorphins,

The mind’s trick of telling you you’re not in pain,

It’s easy to become numb to it.

Now I feel the distance

And realize the guise its been hiding behind.

It takes you back to who you once were

Making you run marathon distances

In the hopes of never looking back…

But when you’re on a track, you just run in circles.
