Love as I understand it

Love as I understand it

A Poem by Christine

None of us asked to be born.

It was the decision of bodies

Fused for just enough time to

Conceive

of a situation in which you have ultimate control…

Our own existences don’t even fit the criteria.

Who do we have to give thanks for being thrust into the world

Without a moment to consider if it’s a good place to

Live

among souls who can’t recognize their insignificance.

Arbitrary human beings thrown into chaotic confusion

Of which no one can draw out any clear order

Unless you’re one of those people who can

Love

orders the chaos.

Even if it’s a delusional misconception as to why we’re here,

A fantastical formulation of purpose,

Some misguided notion that if anything else, this is why we’re

Here

is the point at which my cynicism,

Backed by only overwhelming evidence of uncertainty,

Disproves even the smallest inclination to accept love as some euphoric experience which alters

Reality

as we know it is only ephemeral.

I had a dream in which I saw myself in someone else I didn’t yet know,

An infant with features unquestionably belonging to me

With eyes begging to know the mysteries surrounding the universe

Pointing in my direction…

The only answer I could provide was a thoughtful smile

And that was a satisfying response.

I woke feeling cripplingly humbled…

I had dreamt of love.

This is beautiful. Worded and presented in a way that forces you to actually think.
