Stand Up Comedy

Stand Up Comedy

A Poem by Christine

If I ever did stand up, I wouldn't be in it for easy laughs. I'm the kind of funny you have to pay attention to. It's the kind of humor selfish people can't tolerate because it makes them feel embarrassed about how s****y they are for not being able to understand it. It's the kind of humor that judges the acts of others mercilessly but doesn't object to the idea of being judged in return. It's just that no one has tried to figure me out yet. You were the only one to come this close to decoding my biggest defense mechanism to date; in fact, you made my defenses sexy. You turned my self-deprecation into a confidence I have never known; it was a bashful combination of honesty mixed with an alluring coyness, like the time you asked if you were special and I said “No” and kissed you anyway with a smile on my face. You knew I meant the opposite.  Or the time you said I gave you 8 year old boners at work. Or when we couldn't find where my back stopped and my butt began (because I don’t have one). So before I bore my future audiences with material about the perfect and absurdly ironical circumstances about how you came to be, I want you to know that the only way I know how to cope with your rejection is to laugh.

YES! My own sentiments about comedy staring back at me from a screen, written by someone I don't know. I've found a mirror that I like, at long last. Thanks.
