Soulless Mates

Soulless Mates

A Story by foxcryptids

She was not born of the gods, the sun, or the earth. She was forged in the shadows of darkness, in the absence of light and love. When people spit fire and curses in her direction, she simply smiled those cruel and unforgiving lips and thanked them for their honesty. The truth was that she never cared what anyone thought, not because she knew they were wrong, but because she knew they were right. She was a terribly beautiful thing and equally vicious. Any that dared speak to her, she allowed to throw an insult or two in her direction, before she carefully marked their face in her mind for later reference. She never thought upon their words for longer than necessary to craft that smile, but when she would lie awake at night and tremble with the pull of a world so far away, she couldn’t help but wish someone would love the cruelty she held, that the brutal hate that crafted her every bone would be a thing of desire to another. Her pillow cradling her heavy head, her eyes fluttered closed and she dreamed of returning home.

He never tried to hide anything but his true form. They called him soulless for never caring about the lives of others, for never caring if he hurt them. Never one to mind isolation, he roamed the earth in search of her. Calloused hands grappled with reality, slipping in and out of hopelessness, blindly following the voice in the darkness calling out to him. He would know her when he saw her, or, atleast, that’s what he kept telling himself. The darkness caressed him and lulled him into a sense of safety that little could break. Eyes bright and wild with the madness of a man more than slightly out of his wits, he trudged on, day after day, years turning to decades to centuries, never aging a day.

Leaning over the rocky cliffs she stood, letting the wind be the only thing stopping her from falling to a rocky and watery grave. She felt him before she saw his face. It was as if she sensed another part of herself, missing for so long she had almost forgotten its existence, but he never had. Slow, steady steps, closer every second, he could almost feel her, taste her. He had been waiting for this moment for a thousand lifetimes. The wind whipping her dark curls across her face, he cupped her cheek and gazed into her eyes, the eyes that had stared back at him from the darkness every night and beckoned him to continue on every morning, he smiled. A flash of white against tanned skin as he brought her head toward his lips and gently pressed a kiss to her forehead, as if any pressure might break the beautiful woman. She smiled up at him under cruel brows as she placed her hands on his chest and raised herself on her toes, kissing him fully. She threw her arms around his neck as he gripped her waist, falling together into the darkness below.
