Who Said It Was Simple

Who Said It Was Simple

A Poem by River Cole

There are so many roots to the tree of anger
that sometimes the branches shatter
before they bear.

Sitting in Nedicks
the women rally before they march
discussing the problematic girls
they hire to make them free.
An almost white counterman passes
a waiting brother to serve them first
and the ladies neither notice nor reject
the slighter pleasures of their slavery.
But I who am bound by my mirror
as well as my bed
see causes in colour
as well as sex

and sit here wondering
which me will survive
all these liberations.

Societal mores and past perceived courtesies... do work both ways and and while "rooted" in seldom now valid imaginings, the changes come with a very real price and "bent" noses.

I was quite surprised by this piece of poetry. It really drew me in with its narrative and contemplative truth. I feel some of the most incredible writing comes from those who suffer for their art. Who bleed for the words from their heart. I wish you continued success on your writing journey, River.
