I do like this poem. The flow and the story is so good. The lines were strong
"To make me smile
When life is grim"
Something in life we must protect. Rarely do we get rewards and happiness in a long life. A excellent ending also. A outstanding short poem.

well yes, that was my first reaction, but then i reread the line "but though you try/he won't react"
so he hasn't yet been taken from her.

Well I thin the ending has a few meanings. The first way it would normally be taken is for the speaker to have purchased the gun in preparation to murder the girl who stole her man. I think the cryptic message you speak of is more likely either A.) The gun was bought not for the other girl, but for the speaker herself. or B.) The speaker is planning to kill herself now that her lover has been taken away.
