A Child Beneath Her Breast (For the Creative Poetry Group)

A Child Beneath Her Breast (For the Creative Poetry Group)

A Poem by KATHY SUE SILLS
"

A couple longs for a baby.

"

She longs to nurture a baby

beneath her breast,

but her periloud body deceives her.

Ticking of her biological clock mimicks

her need to conceive.

Pertinacious hope lingers.

Visions of pregnancy entertains her thoughts.

Dill pickels with ice cream,

late night cravings.

Belly expanding as the fetus grows

in her womb.

Lamaze classes preparing them for

the journey ahead.

Eyes brim as she visualizes her

husband cutting the umbilical cord

from the babies navel.

A cradle of recant dreams want allow

her to give up.

Nursery rhymes, bed-time stories

dance in her head.

Two a.m. feedings,

Exhausted from lack of sleep,

flourish her with anger that her body

has turned against her.

Each pregnancy test that is negative

her dream is dampen with despair.

The emptiness she feels nauseate her.

Discharge of continual shifting emotions

strangle her.

Husband and kinder tell her it's time

to adopt.

He murmurs, "We'll still be parents."

She nods in agreement.

Life has reimbursed her a chance to

be a mom, not a child her and her husband made, but a generous gift from a stranger.

Raspy cries fill the nursery, as she places

a bottle in its mouth.

Tears of contentment coarse down her cheeks, as she realizes she is nerturing a

baby beneath her breast.

What a moving, beautiful, bittersweet glimpse of a couple's life and love... their longings fulfilled on a different path than dreamed.. but fulfilled in a rich, deep way... a child of their love given as a gift to their arms.

I really felt emotional at the end of this. I felt for her and the pain of not being able to get pregnant and have a baby. I couldn't help hoping she's happy with the baby she does have and I'm sure she will.
