Outside Looking In

Outside Looking In

A Poem by KATHY SUE SILLS
"

A young girl wanting to fit in with her peers

"

She stands on the outside looking in.

Often times a whispered prayer escapes her lips, wishing to...

Have friends

           Go to parties

                     Be beautiful

                                Have money

          Fit in

She's poor in wealth by comparison

to the rich, but abundant in love.

Hand me down clothes is

what she wears.

While they wear designer clothes.

She settles walking or riding the

bus to school.

They cruise around in sports cars.

They hover over her with smirks on

their faces.

Mouths open ready to spew out cruel words.

Rag girl

       Trash

             Stupid

                     Wannabe

Swelling tide of woe washes

over her, dampens her soul

like dew dampens the earth.

Exasperation burns inside her,

 heart overflows with shame.

She doesn't understand why they

can't see the good in her.

She may not be rich with money,

but she's rich at heart.

She has....

    Kind eyes

             Gentle hands

                    Loving heart

Always ready to be a friend,

but she stands on the outside looking in.

Be who you are in your heart and your soul, remember in the end you cannot take it with you, we all face challenges in our lives. I see that some people think because their parents are wealthy that their s**t does not stink but i tell you i can smell it from here. After many years of envying those that had which i had not i realized that all situations have their own set of problems and i will take mine over theirs anytime. Great Poem!

I could relate too well to this when I was younger.. longing but always just at the edge... You've created a powerfully emotional context for your work.. taking us to that place of questioning.. why.. why does the world live on the surface?

There are times in our lives that we all feel like this at one point or another. Lets just say high school is not my fav. time in my life. I loved my early twenties and I am loving my early thirties the most. I have learned to love myself for who I am and I think this poem gets across the idea of what many teens go through on a daily basis.

Life is all about growing and it seems there are always those who feel they are above everybody else...humiliating another is the worst...

nice work on this poem...

A sad story and not so unfamiliar ... Your words are a vivid reminder of our need to look beyond the surface...

I can relate a lot to this piece of writing. A LOT!
"She may not be rich with money,

but she's rich at heart." - This line is what touched me most. But I love the whole thing, and I love how you built it. A subject that many can come across but few can talk about it so beautifully.
