This is unfortunately true. The rich gets richer and the poor get poorer. Its so strange that the rich who have so much are greedy for more and it is sad how being poor defines your status in society so much that a poor person is seen as pathetic and unimportant. A very candid read
I really like this, but I felt a bit uncomfortable with the last line... "being poor is shameful".... I think being poor is sad, maybe even pitiful, because there really is no shame in being poor; it's just LIFE for so many of us, that we can't help, for one reason or another; that's just my opinion... I like the concept of the poem.

WE understand what you are saying about the line being poor is shameful. We meant it in a way that the poor may feel that way.

That may be true as well, but I didn't interpret it that way, my mistake....B
It really doesn't seem fair--the very different hands we're dealt in life. Going back to Vietnam, it was mostly kids of the non-wealthy who fought and died in that war. Several times while in the Navy, I went around soliciting donations for a fellow sailor whose house had burned or similar catastrophe, and invariably, the low-paid enlisteds were far more generous than the officers. (Just the tip of that iceberg) Thank you for a great poem that brings these things to light.
Indenting the lines threw me. I think the subject was intense and I was so caught up in that I didn't see the form. And the poor stay poor because it takes money to make money. But determination can succeed!
Let me school you for a sec. When I first joined the cafe I posted something I thought was haiku. Very quickly learned it was not thanks to Jacob. Much thanks to him. I started studying forms and blew my brain up. These are Senryu. Haiku has to be about nature and reference a season. There's a bunch of rules about Senryu too...about the foibles of man and darkly humorous. Read up on it if interested.
