In nineteen hundred and fifty seven,
the Soviet’s Sputnik flew into space,
and circled the Earth successfully,
giving birth to the great space race.

In April nineteen hundred and sixty one,
the Soviets gave us food for thought,
when Yuri Gagarin took to the skies
and became the very first astronaut.

It was in the following year,
that Kennedy’s announcement was made.
America would send a man to the moon,
by the close of the sixties decade.

On July sixteenth in sixty nine,
a Saturn rocket ship took to the skies,
with Armstrong, Aldrin and Collins on board,
as we watched with eager eyes.

And four days later they stood on the moon
where Armstrong would utter his famous words.
“One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind,’
as we anxiously watched and heard.

Then Aldrin and Armstrong planted their flag
and collected rock samples for just that day.
Then they rejoined their mother spaceship,
their mission complete, and hastily flew away.
