Didn't See That One Coming

A Chapter by illthoughts

Skylar's head quickly rose up at the words that uttered ever so quietly from his lips.

"You don't... what?" Her face was full of confusion.

Why would he ask her out if he didn't like her? And why would he be so rude this morning if it was all a lie? Did Audrey tell him to do this? These were only some of the words racing through Skylar's head. Jen's eyes grew wide.

"She asked you a question, Cayden..." Jen spoke the words slowly, trying not to let her anger get the best of her.

"I don't like Audrey, okay? Jeeze." He spoke the words louder, but not loud enough for his fake girlfriend to hear. "It's a long story. I have to go, Audrey'll get mad." He grabbed the gold handle to his front door and opened it. "Sky... I'm sorry." He was looking at her once again with his soft blue apologetic eyes. "I'll call you." And he was gone.

Skylar tossed in her zebra print bed sheets. Cayden's words kept replaying in her head.

 I don't like Audrey. Sky, I'm sorry.

His blue eyes were engraved into her memory. She could remember everything. The slight breeze, the smell of his delicious cologne filling her nose. The trees swaying making a slight whistling noise. Closing her eyes, she tried to sleep. To stop thinking about him for one second. She sighed. Her phone rang, and her ringtone filled the silence. She didn't bother to look at who was calling. She already knew.

"Cayden..." She spoke his name very quietly.

"I'm sorry." He restated. "For everything. Especially this morning, you were crying..." He trailed off.

"It's... it's nothing, Cayd. Don't worry about it. I'm just glad you called." She admitted. "I was starting to think you forgot about me."

 "Impossible."

 Her heart thudded. "Where's Audrey?"

 He sighed quietly. "Home."

"Ah..." There was a long silence after that, but it didn't become awkward. That was one thing Skylar loved about talking to Cayden.

"I know you're confused. I really wish I could tell you why I acted like that.. but I can't." He said, breaking the silence.

 Skylar didn't say anything.

"Well, get some sleep. See you tomorrow. Oh, I'm having a party... I'd really like it if you'd come. Audrey's going to be out of town for a few days, so she won't be bothering you. Mike and Michelle will be there also." He was almost begging.

"Yeah, sure. Sleep well." And she hung up.

Sighing, she layed her phone back onto her nightstand. She sat up and looked at her hands. She had to tell Cayden how she felt... this couldn't go on forever.
