Being Muslim

Being Muslim

A Poem by Ikram Zetraoui
"

I'm a Muslim girl living in fear in the US

"
Being Muslim

I couldn’t ride the school bus anymore
I wouldn’t read the precious religious book
People are scared of me
They didn’t want to sit next to me
I had to dress as an American
So they would accept me
I felt so hated by everybody
They took my innocence, saw me as a big terrorist
This was insane
They couldn’t feel my pain
I felt like the man on the news
He had to get off the plane
Because of what he said
“InshaAllah” this is not terrorism
It means “ If God wants to “
Bus or plane, we’re both victims
They will never feel my pain
When I always remember that I am hated
Unwanted by them
Unaccepted by them
I am just ignored
They never asked for my opinion
Makhzoomi and I, have the same hate
That’s why dear people, we’re just like you
We don’t like bombs, we’re peaceful
And that’s what Islam means .

As I am Muslim myself, I can relate to this. I live in a secluded area so it is not as bad as it could be. But I do still feel the eyes on me sometimes (if you know what I mean) Islam is a religion of peace. They shouldn't judge us by ISIS. Those people aren't even muslim. I absolutely loved this poem. But I hate that it's so true.

A very very heartfelt poem. Its a shame that certain people are put into one category. I really felt your words reach out. Being so young too cant help. I hear loud and clear what your saying.

A very well penned piece.

Not a problem.
Thank you for sharing.

Mark.
I like how plain this is. No sugar coating.
Sometimes you just have to ignore the world and work towards your aim in life.
I hope you can get through it.
