Being MuslimA Poem by Ikram ZetraouiI'm a Muslim girl living in fear in the US
Being Muslim
I couldn’t ride the school bus anymore I wouldn’t read the precious religious book People are scared of me They didn’t want to sit next to me I had to dress as an American So they would accept me I felt so hated by everybody They took my innocence, saw me as a big terrorist This was insane They couldn’t feel my pain I felt like the man on the news He had to get off the plane Because of what he said “InshaAllah” this is not terrorism It means “ If God wants to “ Bus or plane, we’re both victims They will never feel my pain When I always remember that I am hated Unwanted by them Unaccepted by them I am just ignored They never asked for my opinion Makhzoomi and I, have the same hate That’s why dear people, we’re just like you We don’t like bombs, we’re peaceful And that’s what Islam means .
