The Flame

The Flame

A Poem by Marvin K. Mooney
"

Also about a girl.

"
Maybe if you weren't so sure you knew me,
Maybe if your face weren't quite so grave,
Maybe if you were a bit less skinny,
Maybe if you acted more your age,

Maybe if you changed one thing about yourself --
If you weren't two steps ahead, or smart, or brave --
Maybe then I could somehow forget you,
And the world would seem familiar, and sane.

Just so you know, my heels are where my head should be,
But everything looks right side up from here.
The lantern sways from everything my heart should want;
Eclipsing shadows drown what once was clear.

And I'm strangely unashamed
Of the notion that remains:
In this mind of dancing moths,
You are the Flame

Beautiful. You have expressed the head over heels experience in a brand new way. There is a hint of some doubt or sadness that makes it all the more poignant. I love especially your last stanza.
