You don't know

You don't know

A Poem by idiotproof--1

You don't understand that every night he cries himself to sleep.
You don't know because he doesn't want to trouble you
with what troubles him.
He's breaking apart and trying to hold you together.
He doesn't know you're already in pieces.
He doesn't know you stopped trying to put yourself together a long time ago
because you don't want to worry him
with what worries you.
Neither of you know because
we protect the things closest to us
we embrace what we love
with one hand
and cover their eyes
with the other.
Keeping them blind to all our pain.
He doesn't know
the man in the other room would give him
all the stars in the sky
if he thought it would help.
Neither of them know
they are the sun, the moon and the earth to each other.
Neither of them know
they are the beginning and the end of love for each other.
Neither of them knew
until one took the others hand and told him
he cried himself to sleep last night because he was still alone.
