Hope is Hopeless

Hope is Hopeless

A Poem by Irene

Someone once told me

“Don’t have hope, have faith”

Because hope is the poison that fuels our brains

The medicinal drug that numbs the pain

But never cures it

She was a broken soul

Lost in a sea of smiles and laughter

All dressed in white

While she stood out in black

Alone

Chaining her heart to her sleeve

Kept insight but not unleashed

She bled

Suffocating from the mass welling inside

That dared not escape the recesses of her mind

And every so often she slipped

She breathed

And felt

A single tear slide down her cheek

As her head lay on her pillow

Tired of hearing

“It will get better”

Sticks and stones may break bones

But silence is suffocating

Overwhelming

And broken bones seem easy

Compared to shattered minds

When giving up is the light of reason

When eternal sleep is the better option

She had hope

Putting her most sacred possession into the hands of others

Becoming completely vulnerable

She gave them trust

But with trust comes pain

Because love is a double edged sword of sacrifice

And beauty

And trust is not the product of one

But two

Where actions aren’t defined as “I” but “we”

Mind already brimming with insanity

She dared to hope

She dared to dream

That this time might be different

That her balancing act between dreams and reality

Would keep her upright

Spectators with beady eyes

Waiting

Watching

For her to fall

Slip, mess up

Little voices whispering

Just a little farther

A little bit longer

But her tired limbs are weary

They threw stones to make her fumble

Sometimes she slipped

Sometimes she bruised

But she kept on going

She kept on hoping

Getting more battered each time

But it never got better

When words are thrown like knives

When loneliness is the epitome of your life

But I guess that’s what you get

When you have hope

Instead of faith

This is really good, I see it is still in progress, I like what you have so far,
When the chips are down, all you can do is brush yourself off and get back up.

If this is still in progress, I'm excited to see the finished product. This was a great piece!

Let me tell you, that because you have not been having the best week, you produced a dangerous, sharply thought-provoking poem. You gave me so much to reconsider and reshuffle, and priorities to rearrange. Thank you for this gift. You are a writer. Keep writing.

yes, if you say that this poem's still in progress then go on and make it more bright but for now it's nice and powerful poem. In our life sometimes "HOPES SEEM HOPELESS", you really beautifully elaborated about this poem. very nice poem and this poem's totally suited on my book "REALITY OF LIFE" and in a chapter "life :A JOURNEY". what i think about life, somehow i can relate it with your this poem.

wow thank you.
In progress or not, it's a great poem, to me at the least. It's one of the things I love about poetry when the writer is 'letting it all out'. It's raw and true. On a side note, I hope things are going better for you now.
