Lost In A Trance

She woke up suddenly and realized it was morning. Looking at her open window, the reality of her disappointment hit hard. She thought she heard a thud as her heart dropped. He didn't come. Her mind kept repeating those words as she lay there, frozen. Numb at first, she softly began crying. She had known he probably wouldn't.

She would have to face the reality that he just didn't want her at all. Even knowing, remembering the words he'd spoken only a few days ago, "You should see whoever you want. We cannot have a relationship.". Still she knew that when night came again she'd be ready and waiting. That even while sleeping she'd be hoping. She knew that she'd leave her window open.

It seemed that she could see him through it, while peering out with sleepy, lonely eyes. Despite her heart's yearnings and the pain of rejection. She'd peer through it, reminding her of sweeter moments. Why couldn't she just close it? Close the window, stop this illusion?

She didn't know, except she lay there lost, in thoughts of what might have been. The sun began to shine brighter, through her open window. The heat of the day now coming in. She could only distract herself now and close the window.
