For My Daughter

For My Daughter

A Poem by Colleen

I was young

When you entered the world.

Perhaps, too young

I have made mistakes.

Some cannot be repaired,

But I was learning too.

I have not always been there.

As I was trying to find my own way,

I could not see that you were losing yours.

I have spent years trying to fix

The damage so severe.

But I have never given up.

I have tried to show you

How much I love you,

But you refused to believe.

As you walked out the door

To start your new life,

Tears welled up in your eyes.

And I think,

We finally understand each other.

Oh my gosh... right at the end, this gave me a burst of emotion that was both sad, and wonderful.

Beautiful writing.

This definitely strikes a chord; reminds me a bit of my own mother. Very poignant piece, my stomach flopped a bit at the beautiful honesty. I think many of us with a similar situation can definitely agree with these thoughts and feelings - it's not easy to be a younger parent nor is it easy to be the child of a younger parent, but I think there is often a sense of understanding in the end, when it's time for the child to go out on their own. Thank you for sharing this.
