I crack that virgin spine with the deftness of a pro. The scent of her potential wafts into the deepest recesses of my brain.
It's enough for only a moment, a cursory glance at the supine sides already becoming supple beneath my nimble fingers as I push the edges wide.
The anticipation is beyond containment as I lie back on soft pillows and take a sip of wine. There is no point of return, the weight of my deed is filled with guilty pleasure.
And I sigh...
I gently remove the cover and peer hungrily upon her bold delicious title and we begin our journey together, I turn the pages, and she, tells me her story.
All lovers of the written word can relate to this poem. When a book opens, we fall in. It's the safest way to travel to far and distant lands and a vicarious way of experiencing the yet unknowns. We have a local book store called Givens Book Store. While they are in a new building now, I much prefer the old one, with the basement that smelled of old leather-bound, gilded-paged books. I spent so many days and so many lunch hours delving through the first editions and particularly loved the ones hidden behind glass walls. Sadly, those enjoyable visits dissipated with the building of the new store. There are great modern conveniences, such as the Kindle; but in my opinion, there's just nothing like holding an actual book within your hands. I love this one, and it's refreshing to come back and read your work after having been away for so long.

Ha ha...thanks so much Einstein. You read it through the peep hole. Love your response.
Reading this, am sadden, at what I have lost, as a result of, my severe chronic depression and PTSD, the ability to sit down and read. Even reading, some of the beautiful writing here, can be, a grueling challenge for me. Not sure, if I should be crying, or cheering, I have been able to read your poem, Icelandicblue. Either way, am thanking you, for sharing this, with us.

Thank you for your comment therisa. I hope that you will find the joy of reading once again.
I can relate to this so much, a new book sits on the seat beside me on the way home from the bookstore, taunting me, I will pick it up at a stop light to look at it again, impatient to sit with it and have it reveals its secrets.
Well written, ma'am.

Good words and story in the poem.

Good to listen to stories. Allow us to become part of other folks lives. Thank you for sharing the excellent poetry.

You are welcome. Always a pleasure to read your words.
i have a novel to read, sitting on my desk...speaking of spine...
i will open this book and savor every words, even though i have read it before....a writer friend of mine wrote this book almost 14 years ago---i read the chapters as she was writing it...she sent them to me...now she has finally published the book after 14 years...and i will really savor it, wishing she could enjoy the success...but unfortunately her early dementia is making that almost an impossibility.
this poem is wonderful...

I love to reread certain books and once again I am reminded of a quote by Oscar Wilde, "If one cannot enjoy reading a book over and over again, there is no use in reading it at all."
You know you have truly enjoyed a book when it ends. In that moment if you feel lost, a void takes form, and you miss the people whose lives you have been immersed in, then you know you will be back. Thank you for the lovely review and enjoy your book again.
This is delightful! I very much enjoyed every deliciously descriptive word. It makes me hungry for the holidays, when I can relax with my own wine in my own couch and pour over my pile of new books. Great writing, my read-o-philic friend...:)

I do not accept any new friend requests unless we have read and commented on each others poetry. No exceptions. I have enough homework as it is. I expect reciprocity in our exchanges. Read my work and.. more..
