The Road That Led To The Field

The Road That Led To The Field

A Poem by icelandicblue

I breathed in the loamy scent of the earth
and watched the tree that had rooted itself
in the middle of that field two hundred years ago.

The tree hadn't changed much since I started watching it
but I had been deeply altered during my span here.
The tree was content where I had never been.

Along the way I had shucked my roots and ran
always looking for life to spark me forward
quenching my own fire with tears of regret.

They say you can't go home,
but maybe you can come home to die,
back to the tree that marked your place.

Lifetimes of wandering all flow to the end of the same road,
then we will all become something other than what we were,
and I've been thinking that tree has been waiting on me long enough.

A powerful commentary on this journey of Life. So many of us gage our lives by how far we are from where we began. In the end, where we began made us become the journey.

You're welcome.
oh.my.goodness. A hard edge on this one. A very hard edge. It was like a finger in the chest - a reprimand. This makes the ire rise up in me - the poem is tangible. Well written. Powerful - but I want to fight it. I want to tell it NO. The tree is WRONG. Does that makes sense?

I know...don't go gently...it was one of those days. Thanks so much.
Oh my, how I have missed reading you Anne. There are so many amazing lines, this poem is so on-point it almost feels surreal. The analogy here is outstanding. Anne, you truly are my favourite poet!

You're most welcome my friend
There are so many amazing layers to this piece. When you go home and realize it's all different, and maybe that's okay and it's time to stop wandering.

You can't runaway but you really can't come back either. Change really is the only constant. Thanks .. read more

Don`t le t me dash cold water on your beautiful poem.
It is an exceptional story/poem-- I only wish I had such
sparkling talent, wonderful insight and the ability to write it all.
Thank you,

In reading your poem, I am reminded that wherever you go, there you are. In short. I believe that if we are happy at heart, we will be happy no matter where we are If we are happy, we don't have to go chasing after that something that we feel we are missing. Once we get there, we'll still be searching. That tree is you, it's root your soul.

Very nicely penned!

That was beautiful...thank you so much Linda.
Hmm
Find myself
At a lost of words
To express my feelings.

Except
I'm pondering
What you have wrote
As it means
To my life.

Wondering
How my road taken
Leads back
Home.

Thank you, Icelandicblue, for this thought provoking poem, to ponder upon.

Your welcome.
Which road or path we take comes down to choice for some and necessity for others. But still I wonder at why those with choice would still take the dark road … one hopes that tree still waits for all. Great penning.
