To My Child At Christmas

To My Child At Christmas

A Poem by icelandicblue
"

He opened the box and burned me to a crisp with its light. Love is not always enough. I have given it to him I hope someday he finds strength in it.

"
My myopia makes the lights blur
on the Christmas tree adding a melding of
light and color that no impressionist
could adequately capture.

In those moments of smudged view
I wish that the memories I carry
could melt into colored wax
and be molded into a more pleasing form.

Shiny packages rest beneath the tree
bearing promises of momentary bliss,
not for what the box contains
but for what it represents;

love was carefully placed
among the softest tissue
and covered in mirrored paper
wrapped in lustrous satin curls,

a symbolic way to say I love you,
I know you and I cherish each of you.
It is not about the item in the box,
it is forever about you.

However, if I were able I would enclose
pure love, white light, silken and smooth
that would envelop you, my wayward son,
to guide you to the path of your own salvation.

Oh were I able to capture that for you
and watch the luminescence fill your pores
and soothe your soul so that you might find
each footstep to a life overflowing with hope and happiness.

I love you Evan, Merry Christmas 2013

Evan I am not,
But I was a boy.
Dirty skinned, holes in the Knees boy,
Squeezing limes n salt on my tongue boy,
Ripping paper and ribbons joy from toy to toy ending
With a fort in the Box they came in.
Like a kitty cat cubby home in a home.
The Box a Icelandicblue ship of hope,
I think ,
I pray Evan won't give up on you,
On Hope,
On the words you have sent into this
Cosmos possibility placard.

That carefully wrapped present beneath the Christmas tree is testimony to an edifying, unconditional and indeed I would purport, the most powerful human emotion....A mother's love for her child !

Enchanting and spiritually enlightening !!

Thank you so much Tom. You are a very kind person.
Oh were I able to capture that for you

From one mother of a son to another … you write with beauty and love and I hope your words guide him to a better place.

Thank you Pryde.
Great write. I enjoy your poetic style; beautifully elucidated thoughts interspersed with vivid words. I can appreciate this poem as an anthem of hope and calling- of parents with wayward children. If only words of love could forge a path of salvation for the wild one then a lot of things would be fine. Good stuff, I thoroughly enjoyed that.

The concept of memories melting into a more pleasing form....like wax...is fantastic! Every mother wants to protect her children...to be with them when they are afraid or in need of a warm embrace. To be able to inject peace into the souls of our children....oh yes, that would be a gift indeed. However, besides the deep maternal love in this one, I think you are so right about gift giving in general....it’s not about what’s inside the shiny wrapping paper or beneath the bow. It’s about the fact someone cared enough to think of you and to remember you for the holiday. This is a warm and wonderful write. I am sure your son will cherish it. A pleasure to read. Lydi**

Thank you for your beautiful response Ldyi, it is most appreciated.
Yes, you have put into words what I feel (and I'm sure all parents feel) towards their children. We want happiness for them above all things. What we would do to make that true right? Wonderful verse Ice, my new favorite from you.

Thank you so much Mark. Merry Christmas to you.
All parents should have such love for their children, and all children should know how lucky they are to have it when they receive it. Sadly, the coins are often flipped, where the children who appreciate it, because they don't have it, know that they never will, while those that have it don't learn to appreciate it until later in life.

I am really disheartened when I see people who have given their children everything, and the children don't appreciate it at all. They take for granted what they have and do and say the nastiest things to their parents. I see it all, knowing how grateful I would have been to have received 1/10th of what they have been given.

Evan sounds very blessed, and it swells my heart with joy to see the love that you have for him.

God bless you, and I hope that you have a Merry Christmas.
