Drugged Culture

Drugged Culture

A Poem by icelandicblue

Wanted: Junkie Full Time
Hours: 24/7
Will Train

There are no special set of skills
to wield a needle.
A willingness borne of need
to feed an insatiable demon.

Oblivion is the smallest part
of the mosaic.
Cajoling and conning are constant
companions in each quest.

Love becomes a sword
playing on others hopes and fears.
It's nothing personal;
it's just part of the job.

A hamster wheel of sickness
and relief unevenly distributed-
while the Greek chorus stands in the wings
waiting to sing the final dirge.

Any addiction is like a hamster wheel of sickness. They keep going forward because they are going too fast to stop and go in reverse. So it's a difficult cycle to break. I liked how you started it off like a help wanted add with little skill set required. And yet so many wait in line for the job because of temporary bliss. I think the intentions start out innocent enough...we are all looking for easy outs from a difficult reality.

WE are a culture looking for the next "fix". This poem could apply to many of our fruitless pursuits in modern society.

Thanks so much for reading and commenting.
This hits like a hammer and I love it. It captures the absurdity of drug usage and the terrible toll it takes on loved ones. I HATE drugs and am constantly dismayed by a tone that sounds like people want to quit on the "war on drugs" I say it's time to fight the battle on another front. But is a whole other rant.

I ADORE this poem.
