Drugged Culture

Drugged Culture

A Poem by icelandicblue

Wanted: Junkie Full Time
Hours: 24/7
Will Train

There are no special set of skills
to wield a needle.
A willingness borne of need
to feed an insatiable demon.

Oblivion is the smallest part
of the mosaic.
Cajoling and conning are constant
companions in each quest.

Love becomes a sword
playing on others hopes and fears.
It's nothing personal;
it's just part of the job.

A hamster wheel of sickness
and relief unevenly distributed-
while the Greek chorus stands in the wings
waiting to sing the final dirge.

Any addiction is like a hamster wheel of sickness. They keep going forward because they are going too fast to stop and go in reverse. So it's a difficult cycle to break. I liked how you started it off like a help wanted add with little skill set required. And yet so many wait in line for the job because of temporary bliss. I think the intentions start out innocent enough...we are all looking for easy outs from a difficult reality.

This is sorrowfully sad piece. Well constructed though . I also have a drug problem when I was a child. My parents dragged me to church... :)

He is in search of a higher power as we speak. I pray he can see through the darkness. Thank you.

Well done, I'm currently working on a piece of the same topic, different perspective. This was an impactful piece. Addiction has indeed become a part of our culture. "A hamster wheel of sickness" that line was like a well aimed dart!

It was a pleasure.
Thankfully, drug addiction was one thing I never had to deal with. I have had a brush with alcoholism...one of my kids did get himself caught in that hamster wheel, and it wasn't pretty. He still gets depressed from time to time, and I will always worry about him.
Your poem touched my heart. I just wish there were some way to reach those who might answer that ad...BEFORE they get stuck in that ever-spinning wheel...
Brilliant job, my friend!

Thank you Angel, it is no way to live for anyone.
We live within a Junkie society because there are many subtle kinds of addictions as well as drugs. Drugs are the tip of the iceberg. Needs are manufactured as cravings for them are forced through the use of spin, hype, and subliminal messages transmitted unknowingly to our subconscious minds. Our puppet strings are invisible. We're not fully conscious of all the addictions that affect us from day to day.

You are absolutely right- it is a jungle out there. Thanks for such a thoughtful review Aethereal.
Anne, this is very deep and very true. Your words are extremely powerful in this piece today. You do have a gift at pulling at our midns and shaking us by the shoulders, shouting, "listen up!" I liked this.
