Low In The Fields Of Fire

Low In The Fields Of Fire

A Poem by icelandicblue

The leaves quiver in my wake,
and the evergreens stand in silence,
quietly sharpening their needles
lest I accidentally brush up against them.
Not all of nature is pleased with my company,
for my intrusion into their Elysian fields
may portend their own destruction.

Carefully I step upon the path
that bids me welcome, and tread
with small steps of trepidation.
I inhale the shadowed pine, embracing
its scent with the hunger of the drowning,
burdens begin to fall to the forest floor;
wood chips surrounding the chopping block.

The sun now standing at attention,
awaiting the day with expectant warmth,
as I protect my eyes from hope’s glare
and stand unbowed low in the fields
of fire, my shield finely forged, so that I
might venture onto the next plane of conflict.

My Grandfather used that word below "Adequate" to the waitress describing a meal, Love the word. My Dad when ordering would end with "and a good helping of Kind words too please" This poem needs a "Latour" to sip and fire up the layers I think you are speaking to.

Ah lee,
You are good for the soul.

Thanks
Our battle on the field of life is one that requires one to have a shield that is finely forged as well as a will of iron, and an unending measure of wisdom, patience, and the ability to accept that which life bombards us with as its weapons - which seem to change day by day. We might wake in the morning and need patience, and then have to muster up an extra measure of love and understanding for someone who apparently does not regard the "us" of us as acceptable. The day progresses and we march onward with shield ready for the next blow. Are we ever fully prepared for that which life deems fit for us? I think not. We must try to forge on the best we can and weather the gales that bring the good with the bad. That is victory! Just surviving what comes at us when we are low in the fields of fire - Yes, that is victory!
A very well thought out poem my friend!!

Sheila,

Thank you so much for that absolutely awesome comment. I agree we are ready but.. read more
You have penned a warriors tale. I think the shield will hold well. My worry is, when the battle is ended, will the shield become a prison? Maybe, maybe not. Still the battle at hand must be fought and we must prevail if the morrows worries are to be dealt with.
A write that brings me into the wilderness that is my home. Wonderfully done!

Thanks Jack, nature is healing (as I hide with the covers over my head).
Just realised I haven't commented, sorry!

This is an absolute outstanding write, Blue. There is so much meaning behind the words and it was a remarkable read. It's such a deep read but it's really captivating, in a sense. Amazing.

You're sweet. :-)

The pleasure is always mine. :)
This is one of those pieces that requires at least two reads in order to get the full picture, probably a few more to truly understand the words; I mean this in the best way. There is much written between these lines and weaved around these images like a beautiful little thread. I'm enamoured with this write!
