Tea was on the tepid side
as was the conversation;
barely a crack in the
skim-coat of pancake makeup.
Moth balls and sighs filled
the void between sips by
smoke-ringed lips, each
waiting for the other to add the
first spark of awareness.
Their unused hearts were unaccustomed
to the normal rhythms of living.
They have become bystanders
reflected in the bakery window,
staring at their own demise.
I know you're away, and probably won't see this for a while, and it's entirely my fault for neglecting my RR queue for so long, but I wanted to comment...ready?
That first stanza is gold. And the rest? Really great stuff. I'm picturing a couple of spinsters here, finding joy in nothing at all, really...it made me sad. Well done. Hurry back...

Yes, I've been gone for a while, we're not sure if my dad is dying. He fell off a second story ladder two weeks ago and he's in rough shape. Honestly, it's like an episode of house, they are already talking about writing a paper about him. We're not sure what is going on. I've been dealing with it the best I can, families can add as much stress to the situation as the injury...but it's nice to see you grace my page with your thoughts and I miss reading your Judas Me. I'm the health care proxy and I am hoping I don't have to make those big life ending decisions. There will be lots of poems coming about this time in my life. Thanks kimmer for not forgetting me. ; )

He's a Bostonian, right?? That's a tough breed right there...if anyone can pull through, it's a Bostonian ;-) xoxo
This is so sad....and so common. Amazingly, it tends to be prevalent among a large proportion of prolonged relationships... where there is a need to regenerate the bond, but no longer the chemical connection. Wooden company is lonely. This piece is excellent. P.

Thanks so much Pete! What you say is unfortunately so true.
This could be speaking of complete strangers or married strangers. How sad in either case. You have captured precisely the the tepid feelings that come with a life stagnant.

It is so easy to fall into the malaise of life. Thanks for commenting.

Thanks so much. I always look forward to your reviews.
hat beautifully expressive language, painting a picture of life without the living, just going through the motions and paying little attention to what is taken for granted, until it is too late.

Lorry- yest that is exactly what I was writing about. Thanks so much for your fine comment.
I do not accept any new friend requests unless we have read and commented on each others poetry. No exceptions. I have enough homework as it is. I expect reciprocity in our exchanges. Read my work and.. more..
