Speculations and algernative histories are fun, but of course, no one can say what really might have happened. Bad Ad seriously considered himself an artist for a while, but it didn't work out. My speculation, being a former mental health worker, is that he had a personality disorder that was triggered by 48 months with little leave on the western front in WW1, and maybe PTSD as a result. Probably nothing you could have taught him could have swerved him from what he knew was his "destiny." It's a nice thought, though.
