Forever OnwardsA Story by Ian J KnowlesA flash fiction story which I hope gives people an insight into my kind of writing. I won't say much about the story itself as I would like the description to consist of fewer words than the story.Forever onwards he moved. Towards death or glory he did not know. His castle lay far behind him as he finally neared enemy territory. He started to think about the reasons why he was fighting. He didn’t have any family or many belongings. He just owned a small plot of land, which he could probably acquire in another kingdom without much trouble. So, why was he risking his life just for this? Was it because the King had told him to do it? He hadn’t even questioned it until now, yet this was the biggest sacrifice anyone could ever make. Their life. Trading the chance of your life being taken with what? The freedom to carry on living under the reign of a man who cared little if he died. And if he refused to fight, he would be put to death by his own King. The choice of being killed or having the chance to fight for survival was easy. Though it didn’t make him feel any better. He was a slave. A slave to his King and now to death.
He looked either side of him and saw his brothers in arms. As he wondered if they felt the same as him, they crossed into enemy territory and all his thoughts turned to battle and staying alive. He could see the opposition more clearly now as the distance between them shortened. He noticed they were of darker skin than him but more or less the same in every other way. Their height, build, garb and even their features were similar to his. Before he could think any further a horse bounded past him from behind and broke the enemy line killing a soldier as it went.
Before he reached the enemy line himself and tasted battle, a bishop swiped him from where he stood, on square F5. © 2016 Ian J Knowles |
