The woman in the trench coat and bowler hat stood, peering around the corner of the wall in the alleyway between the two houses and stepped out into the street, just as the click of a door sounded to her right. She saw the slight outline of a girl and immediately threw up her shield, relaxing her stance, letting the long, black coat fall open slightly to reveal a thin, skeletal frame. The girl with the multi-coloured backpack stood at the side of the cracked pavement. She pulled out a small, LG phone and dialled a seven-digit number. This had been easier than she’d thought. The person at the other side of her call answered on the fifth ring, snapping a hello and asking who it was. “It’s me.” She paused as the person on the other end asked something in a cynical tone, “Yes, I have them.” said a high feminine voice, slightly irritated and annoyed. She hung up and turned towards the girl who, to her dismay, was staring right at her. It’s impossible " she hadn’t dropped her shield. The girl’s eyes were on her, but as they moved around the rest of the street, the woman relaxed. She’d known it had been possible for anyone to notice her but that didn’t stop her being wary of mistakes. All it took was one person, one person immune to her power and she was finished. Because once you are in the game, you never get to leave. She couldn’t risk that. She watched as a car pulled up to the kerb and the door opened, welcoming the girl into the back seat. The door slammed and the car sped away, taking any chance of her catching the Leigh girl with it. The woman knew the absolute hell she would get in for losing her again. She sighed and turned, walking away without a qualms or uncertainty, this was going to be a hard few days but at the end of it she was sure, she knew, it would finally be worth it. © 2011 ilikecereal1997Author's Note
