Smoke Show

I wrote this during the Kincaid fire of 2019. What it's like to worry about someone who's not your responsibility.

I see all this smoke,

but I know it's not yours

I'm ready to choke

because the air is just poor

I worry about you

and wonder where you are

I just wish I could do

more than stay parked

I hear you have a man

I hope he does what he can

to give you comfort or keep you safe

because I'm too far to hold your hand

I also wonder now

if I've crossed your mind

or if I'm some fool

who is wasting his time

I want to protect you

and just want to help

because I can't forget you

and want you for myself

I hope all is well

and that I'll see you again

Distance is its own little hell,

even if you're not my girlfriend

Please be safe

and your family, too

because I'll be in pain

if I can't talk to you

quite a terrifying situation to find yourself, in love with something that is not yours. The solution is quite relative and uncertain. lovely written poem by the way

The notes indicate the poem was written during a fire, probably one of the fierce California fires of earlier this year. The speaker's concern is evident, even though he is no longer involved with the woman. We feel all the anxiety of one who wants to help but is not able to. Hope the lady came through it all right.
